Cinematography

What is Cinematography?
Cinematography is the art of making motion pictures. It tells a story which is done through composition and a technique known ask "rule of thirds".

What is Composition?

“A work of art is a composition of tensions and resolutions, balance and unbalance, rhythmic coherence, a precarious yet continuous unity. Life is a natural process of such tensions, balances rhythm; it is these that we feel, in quietness of emotion, as the pulse of our own living.” - Susan Langer - The Dynamic Image

During this lab session we spoke about the different aspects of Cinematography, during the lab we were asked to go out and take pictures on specific topics, my results are as below.

This image here represents lines. The reason I had chosen to take a picture such as this one was because I felt it showed good lighting with the way it fades and still strongly shows lines, so they are always there despite going from black to white.

This picture represents Shape, I felt during the time I was taking pictures this gave me the best form of a shape, as it is a simple easy shape to understand and it is also perfectly round!

In terms of Value I think money was the best choice to have, for me when it comes to money I understand the value of it, and this is why this came to mind right away.

This is a picture that represents colour, I felt the way it fades colour is very smooth yet very subtle, very eye catching and gives of a very cool feeling.

For Texture I had chosen to take a picture of my beard, this is because my beard has many different textures, at times it is very soft and fluffy and other times it is prickly and irritating.

For Volume I did not want to take a picture of an actual speaker or volume control because I felt this is very typical, instead I had gone ahead and taken a picture of a phones speaker.

The reasoning behind this image is Space, the reason I had chosen to take a picture of the inside space of a cup is because I felt this is more unique to what most people would chose, when people hear the word 'space' the instantly think of outer space, or space between people, and this is why I chose the inside of a cup.

When you hear Time, you instantly think clock or watch. Coming from an athletics background when I hear time, I instantly think Timer, as in a timer being used to time my runs.

This image of motion was captured by an iPhone of my friend’s hand moving in motion.
